MdQ1 2025 Award of Excellence

To align with Maryland’s statewide carbon reduction goals, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has launched a groundbreaking pilot program to deploy zero-emissions battery-electric buses (BEBs) in the Core Bus fleet serving Greater Baltimore. The project won 2025 Award of Excellence at MdQI event this month.

This initiative represents a major step forward in creating a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable public transit system. As part of this innovative program, Jeezny served as a key project lead, supporting end-to-end planning, implementation, and commissioning of critical infrastructure elements that made the pilot possible. Our work included coordination across multiple stakeholder groups, engineering
support, and oversight of technology deployment.

The core components of the Kirk BEB Pilot included:
Deployment of seven New Flyer Excelsior battery-electric buses (four 40-foot and three 60-foot vehicles)
Installation of three 200kW ground-mounted plug-in charging stations with seven dispensers
Utility upgrades to support the new charging infrastructure, including a 750 kVa utility feed, new transformer, and CT cabinet
Three 50kW mobile charging cabinets to enhance fleet flexibility and resilience
Development of a comprehensive training curriculum for operations staff and a Registered Apprenticeship Program for bus mechanics

Launched in January 2024, the pilot program at MTA’s Kirk Division in Baltimore City is already generating valuable operational data and insights to inform future BEB and charging infrastructure deployments across the state. Most importantly, these buses are delivering immediate environmental benefits—reducing both air and noise pollution for transit-reliant communities in Baltimore. Jeezny is proud to help drive this critical transition to clean transportation. By enabling scalable, data-driven deployments, we’re helping MTA lay the groundwork for a more sustainable, equitable future in transit.
